The upcoming Web Summit Qatar is poised to offer distinctive prospects for startups, investors, and the broader tech community.
During an engaging presentation at the ‘Runway to Web Summit,’ Katherine Maher, CEO of Web Summit, underscored the potential and offerings of the world’s largest technology conference. This precursor event to Web Summit Qatar recently took place at Qatar Science and Technology Park.
Maher expressed, “At the Web Summit, startups will have the chance to unleash their potential and create innovative solutions globally,” highlighting the vast untapped creativity, energy, and market potential in the Arabic-speaking world.
Web Summit Qatar, the first of its kind in the region, is scheduled to occur at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) from February 26-29, 2024.
Over the four days, thousands of regional and international entrepreneurs, investors, and the next generation of leaders will explore new opportunities in the rapidly expanding tech scene in the region.
Recognizing Doha as a significant hub, Maher commented, “Sitting here in Doha, there's an incredible opportunity to bring people not just from the Arabic-speaking world but also from South Asia and Africa. I’m tremendously excited about that.”
Maher emphasized the role of startups in addressing market opportunities and accessing young talent, creative capital, and technological skills. She also highlighted the evident passion for developing the ecosystem in the region.
“There is a transformation in becoming hospitable and encouraging to startups. Cultural change involves acceptance, tolerance, even embracing risk and failure,” she stated.
Maher discussed the collaborative nature of Web Summit, where startups can gain access to established entities in various fields, such as energy, aviation, media, and telecommunications, particularly in Doha.
“There is an opportunity for startups to have access to mature services,” she affirmed.
Expecting a global investor presence, Maher expressed confidence in attracting investors from the US, Europe, Asia, and the GCC. She underscored the diversity of interests among investors, noting that it would contribute to the success of both investors and startups.
Maher touched upon the significance of master classes and exhibitions, emphasizing the success of similar opportunities at past Web Summits. She noted the passion for developing the ecosystem and the necessity for cultural change, acceptance of risk, and learning from failure.
Regarding the Web Summit’s unique value, Maher emphasized, “There is no other event like Web Summit, where people meet and maintain connections.”
