In response to an ongoing bloody bombing campaign against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Israel plans on banning the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera from reporting there after receiving approval from its attorney general.
According to Israeli media reports, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi reached an agreement on Tuesday on the wording of emergency regulations to shut down the Qatari media outlet.
Karhi had said on Sunday he was seeking closure from Al Jazeera's local bureau, accusing the channel of pro-Hamas incitement and exposing Israeli soldiers to potential attack.
Legal experts had reviewed the proposal, which had been vetted by Israeli security officials.
Al Jazeera's coverage of the Gaza War has been repeatedly criticized by the Israeli government. They are one of the few global media channels that has a physical presence in Gaza and Israel.
It is up to the media already on the ground to cover the ongoing bombing campaign since Israel prevents anyone from leaving Gaza or entering it.
After Israeli soldiers shot and killed veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May 2022, Al Jazeera's relations with the Israeli government have been strained.
