Qatari authorities have been working hard to ensure the country's future is green and sustainable. One major area of Qatar’s interest has been in pushing out more green vehicles and the efforts are bearing fruit.
Arthur D Little's Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index (GEMRIX) 2023 ranks Qatar ninth in the world for EV mobility.
The third edition of the study, GEMRIX 2023, covers 35 markets across all continents, making it the most comprehensive EV market readiness indicator available.
In accordance with Qatar's National Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030, the achievement was the result of Qatar's commitment to enhancing sustainable mobility.
The Ministry of Transport (MoT) provides innovative, eco-friendly mobility solutions that support Qatar's development on all levels. The MoT has developed a comprehensive, integrated strategy which will help transition the public bus system to 100% electric vehicles by 2030.
At present, nearly 70% of the country's public transportation vehicles are electric buses, which are backed by an integrated electric charging infrastructure. Hence, Qatar is among the world’s leading countries in terms of having a zero-carbon transportation sector. It in turn results in lower energy consumption, harmful emissions, a lighter carbon footprint and a better quality of life.
With the help of the bodies concerned, the MoT is studying the standards and specifications of Electric Vehicles in order to further enhance the country's position. It is also seeking to establish a specialised centre for inspecting and verifying EV specifications and conformity and issuing required approval certificates.
To provide smart, environmentally conscious transit systems, the MoT also launched the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy.
