Renowned Qatari football figure Khalid Salman is well aware of the significance that the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 holds for both players and fans. The accomplished attacking midfielder, who participated in two Asian championships in 1984 and 1988 (with the latter hosted by Qatar), reflects on the tournament as a pivotal milestone in his highly successful career, even though he did not secure the trophy with Alennabi.

“For any footballer, competing in the Asian Cup is a tremendous honor. Facing off against the continent's most formidable teams provides an opportunity to etch one's name in history and bring joy to millions,” remarked Salman, who netted a total of three goals across both tournaments. “I vividly recall the unique experience of playing in front of a home crowd, a factor that will make this upcoming edition exceptionally special for our players.”

Qatar finds itself in Group A alongside China PR, Lebanon, and Tajikistan, commencing their title defense journey at the iconic Lusail Stadium on January 12. In 2019, Qatar clinched their maiden AFC Asian Cup title with an impressive unbeaten run, conceding only one goal in the final against Japan.

“Many would argue that replicating Qatar’s accomplishments from the last tournament is a daunting task. The historic achievement of winning the title, securing the top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, and player of the tournament is unparalleled,” Salman acknowledged. “However, I believe that with determination, the players can achieve glory once more, this time in front of a home crowd.”

The AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 will unfold across nine stadiums, seven of which hosted matches during Qatar 2022. Salman emphasizes the symbolism of the AFC Asian Cup following the FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar just over a year ago.

“The memories of Qatar 2022 are indelible. It was the finest World Cup in the competition's history, not just for the on-field excellence but also for the tournament's ability to unite people and bridge differences,” Salman expressed.

He continued, stating, “The forthcoming Asian Cup provides another platform for Qatar to showcase its prowess in hosting major sporting events. The significance of staging matches at Al Bayt Stadium, drawing inspiration from traditional tents, or at Al Thumama, a venue designed in the shape of the gahfiya, a cap synonymous with the region, cannot be overstated.”

Salman, a three-time goal scorer in the AFC Asian Cup™, missed the opening two matches in the 1988 edition but made a memorable comeback with a brace against a formidable Korea Republic.

“I wish I were still on the field. Donning our national team’s jersey and playing before a home crowd alongside this exceptionally talented group of players would be a dream. Instead, I'll join my fellow Qataris in the stands, enthusiastically cheering the team on in what I'm certain will be the most outstanding Asian Cup to date,” Salman concluded."
