
Doha: Speaker of the Shura Council H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud affirmed that Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s announcement of the Shura Council elections in October 2021 is a new achievement and extension of the Shura process and an enhancement of popular participation in decision-making in a way that supports the development process in the State and enhances Its security and stability.
In exclusive remarks made to Qatar News Agency (QNA), H E the Speaker said that the constitution provides for the establishment of a Council comprising 45 members, 30 of whom are elected and 15 appointed, and noted that the State seeks, through a third of appointed members, to benefit from cadres with experience and knowledge, whether men or women.
Regarding the current session of the Council, he expressed his hope that the 49th session would dedicate to Council's march and enhance popular participation in decision-making, development, security and safety in the in the State.
His Excellency explained that there are a number of laws that will be presented to the Council related to security, justice, the electoral process (the method of elections, electoral districts, and other matters related to this process), and other laws that the State needs, expressing his and the Council member’s commitment to work to end it like the rest of the previous sessions.
The Council is keen to fulfil its role by finalising laws, draft laws and issues of concern to the State, as well as the general discussions presented by members during the session, the Speaker added, noting that the history of Qatar is based on the Shura and the close relationship between the ruler and the ruled.
The Speaker stressed that, under the wise leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar has succeeded in overcoming many difficulties, with the people and state institutions, including the Shura Council, succeeding in facing various challenges, noting that the Qatari people are clear in their words, frank in their principles, and proud of their leadership that has given the country a lot.
The Speaker of the Shura Council pointed out that H H the Amir’s speech was clear about the need to continue to work hard for the sake of the country, adding that H H the Amir also presented a full programme of work in which he explained Qatar’s internal and foreign policy and carried many reassuring messages that Qatar must overcome the challenges of development and many difficult circumstances, despite the blockade and the coronavirus (COVID-19), which is a source of pride in our capabilities and our wise leadership that brought us to this the level.
