Doha: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed the main upgrading works on Bu Sidra Roundabout converting it into a signalised intersection. The recently developed intersection is now open to traffic and infrastructure works are now 80% completed, as part of Road Improvements Works for Junctions & Roundabouts in Various Areas of Greater Doha, Phase 8 Project.
Rashed Al-Marri, Project Engineer in Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department’s West Area Section, highlighted the importance of upgrading the Bu Sidra Roundabout roundabout into a signalized intersection as it links Al Waab Street and Al Sedaira Street and Ras Laffan Street along with enhancing the traffic flow along Al Furousiya Street and Al Sailiya Road which are characterised by heavy traffic movement.
The new intersection also serves several educational and health institutions as well as facilitates access to Muaither Sports Club, Barwa Al Sailiya Compound, Aspire Complex as well as Villaggio Mall and Al Hayat Plaza. The new intersection also connects surrounding areas such as Fereej Al Manaseer, Bu Sidra, Muaither, Baaya and Al-Aziziyah.
Upgrading works included expanding the intersection and increasing the number of lanes on Al Sailiya Road from three to five lanes in each direction then to seven at the completion of all upgrading works. On Al Sedaira Street and Ras Laffan Street, lanes will be increased from three to four lanes in each direction.
Eng Al Marri indicated that in line with the Public Works Authority's support to local manufacturers and in line with Ta’heel initiative which was launched by the Authority in 2017, local materials and manufacturers were relied on for most of the project's work.
Materials and elements supplied from local manufacturers included sewage, surface water and rain water drainage pipes, in addition to lighting poles and luminaires. The local Qatari component used on the project has reached 80%.
Further to converting the roundabout to a signalized intersection, the project’s scope of works will also include the upgrade of 2 Km of roads and the provision of a new service road in addition to the installation of a new lighting system for the service roads. Once complete, infrastructure services’ enhancement works, would have comprised the upgrade of the surface and storm water drainage at a length of 3.4 km, as well as providing a TSE network and protecting electricity and telecommunications services’ lines. The road will also be equipped by directional signs and road markings.
To encourage a healthy lifestyle, pedestrian and cycle paths alongside Al Sailiya Road as well as landscaping works and trees planting will be implemented.
